Longport is located on the southern tip of Absecon Island; the borough encompasses approximately half of a square mile of land area and is bordered by the bay on the northwestern coast and the ocean on the southeastern coast. The town was essentially more commercial in earlier years compared to today and now boasts numerous homes for sale in Longport, NJ. The town composition is mostly residential now with many beautiful beach-front homes and an increase in new construction properties being built.
Longport became a good deal shorter between the years of 1900 and 1916, when approximately 180 acres of the 250 that M. Simpson McCullough (developer/builder) purchased, moved across the inlet and became what is now known as the Ocean City Gardens. This explains why the first avenue of the borough starts at 11th, instead of first, as avenues one through 10 were lost during those years.
Longport has many new construction homes being constructed that are all up-to-date according to current zoning and flood guidelines. Longport offers surfing and other water sports recreation on the beaches at 32nd Avenue and Pelham Avenue. This is a quiet, peaceful beach community that is less hectic than northern shore towns, yet within an easy driving distance to Atlantic City
